I am an Interior Design Grad Student who is working on my fourth year thesis project -- a correctional ficility for young offenders. I am looking to get a broad over view of community based juvenile corrections facilities, the users (physical/emotional needs,how they think/act/feel/heal,etc), the design(security, building systems, code requirements), the programs etc I am looking to find progressive/innovative prototypes of correctional facility design as I am looking to merge these models with the theory of biophilia. Biophilia in short, is the human affinity for nature that dates back to more primitive times, when humans relied on nature to survive. The Theoretical outcome of merging the latestest approaches to community based correction facilities with biophilia, will be an institution that will truely facilitate rehabilitation; mental, physical, and emotional healing, as well as educate, inspire and motivate the user. It is a very broad subject, and I am looking to get more focused but don't know where to start Any help would be great. questions and comments welcome!

I am the Operations Manager and will soon be developing policies around our new DVR /CCTV system. My question is what are the pros and cons of archiving? Or do you just let the DVR rewrite? If you do archive DVR footage how long do you save it 6 months, 1 year???

Use of Sheilds in Juvenile Facilites

Does anyone have any protocols, policies or training on the use of sheilds in juvenile settings? We have developed a policy to allow for their use as a last resort if a youth has a weapon and is threatening staff or himself. DOC has their policy which involves sending in a team, etc...but it is very much adult based. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Officer Staffing and Trends

Can anyone offer some information or suggestions on where I might find Correctional Officer Staffing Standards. Like most of your agencies and departments, my DOC is in need of a staffing readjustment. I'm doing the research for one of the Assistant Commissioners to try to justify a request to increase staffing levels. This state has suffered a documented increase in inmate on staff violence over the past two yeas and two officer deaths at the hands of inmates since January 1, 2006. The logic of the Officer to inmate population ratio doesn't seem to go very far here so we are looking at other ways to make the point. Are there any of you who enjoy mandatory staffing levels based on population, square footage of facility, security level, etc... I would love to hear form you!
