caps in medical contracts

We are in the final stages of negotiating a medical contract for the care of approximately 1700 inmates. What level of cap on catastrophic medical cost is the “standard” in recent contracts? Does anyone have any history on this?

I know med calls are difficult in the long list of things that officers must do. I think there should be a balance between the belief that inmates need to be responsible and the reality that psych patients are a mixed lot. some are quite functional and likely would do okay if they miss meds but some become downright dangerous off them. I have seen officers out on disability and some unable to return to duty after dealing with an out of control person who didn't get or didn't take their psych meds. There also the reality that physically ill people who don't get or don't take their meds can have expensive medical interventions - so as a tax payer it pays to care at least about that. And lets not forget - those who have illnesses that you could contract if they don't get or don't take their meds Unfortunately there also are the officers (the exception not the rule) who do not do anything to encourage med compliance. giving psych patients enough grief that they stop the meds rather than endure the grief. Because you as officers are the front lines you are the eyes and ears for medical and psych providers. And you bet it is appreciated or at least should be. You have difficult jobs! H1N1 - Swine Flu - Preparedness

I have been asked by the director of Alaska Juvenile justice to draft a policy on how we will deal the many potential issues surrounding a major pandemic with swine flu. Some issues are general prevention, reducing risk of introduction, management and isolation of sick juveniles, workforce issues such as reduced workforce and sending staff home etc.. Does anyone have policies developed that they would be willing to share?

Jail Healthcare Costs

I am a correctional health care professional looking for information about real healthcare costs in jails with ADP 1500-2000 inmates. Why? I consult with a number of facilities regarding healthcare and the question, and in this day of ever increasing costs, I am frequently asked, "What is the average cost of health care in jails?" I know that there are many variables that affect each facility'ss costs--please let me know what you have found that impacts your facility's costs. Please include all healthcare costs for medical, dental, and mental health services, all on- and offisite costs, staffing, pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies and number of inmate days (if that statistic is kept). If you know your per diem healthcare costs, I would very much appreciate that figure. While there are figures available for state corrections, there is very little available for jails--the last study was in the late 1990's. Thank you!

Re: Inmate Informational Video Prior to Release from Jail

I'd be happy to send you a packet but it includes local resources and it was fairly easy to put together & includes approx. 10 pages, printed on both sides; shelters, mental health clinics, health care, as described in my post. I will need to mail it, or I might be able to upload the files, and send you a link. I am not sure if members post private email address, as I am new to this forum. The hardest part was getting the Sheriif's Department to let us give out the packets. If we are doing a release mental health evaluation, we give out the packet ourselves, but for many, we don't see them at release and need the Sgt. to give out the info. We had bright green stickers made for the booking folders which idenifiy inmates who will need the packet. All the Sgt. has to do is hand over the packet. The Sgt. also gives out bus passes at the same time & if an inmate says there is no place to go, the Sgt.has extra packets. I will check into the best method early next week and let you know. Kay

Hello, I am an ex correction officer from Georgia and MIchigan. My pastor has put me in charge of forming our correctional outreach ministry. We are in the infant stages of forming the ministry and I am looking for training material to train our future volunteers on inmate manipulation and similiar topics. I would also like information on employment assistance or other prisoner assistance. Information on a prisoners family and children would be benificial also. I would greatly apreciate if anybody can help me with material, (videos and/or paper). Anything will help right now. Another Medical Worry - Valley Fever

The New York Times report, Infection Hits a California Prison Hard, highlights another medical concern for prisons and jails. Valley Fever or Coccidioidomycosis has affected over 900 inmates in the last three years at the Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, California. Eighty prison employees have also contracted the fever and one employee death in 2005 was attributed to the disease. Coccidioidomycosis is caused by spores of a fungus found in the soil in disease-endemic areas.
