In most states, they are part of the larger homeland security agencies and do share intelligence data. FCW.Com (Federal Computer Week) has an interesting story called "Policing Terror". First responders in many agencies are monitoring terrorism through the continued development of intelligence centers that gather, analyze and share intelligence data. In this article you can read about:

Los Angeles's Take on Intelligence

Data Fusion in Louisiana

Read the referenced Rand report "Unconquerable Nation: Knowing our Enemies, Strengthening Ourselves"

Other resources on counter-terrorism are available from the National Institute of Corrections or search the U.S. Department of Justice resources for Technical Assistance and Training (click here.)

A specific related reference from a previous blog is published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on radicalization in prisons.

Tie a Yellow Ribbon...Singapore's response to offender reentry

Greetings everyone, nice to be back with you after the International Prisons and Corrections Conference in Vancouver. One of the highlights was the Yellow Ribbon Project from Singapore.

In the center of the page "Yellow Ribbon Project 2006" there is a little symbol in the top right hand corner "Watch the video"....do take a snapshot ride on this...it's brilliant.

Tony Orlando and Dawn's hits song, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'round the Old Oak Tree" has been used with lyrics re scripted for a theme. What a great theme it is.

They have successfully used a corporate model to "market ex-offenders" reuniting with the community. They have developed a Yellow Ribbon Fund as an external source of continued funding. They host:

walkathons,

poetry contests,

developed a docu-drama TV series,

major concerts that involve the media, professional musicians and ex-offenders in full collaboration for these events.

Family and employers are a major partnership. Check it out! More on the Conference later this week.

Interested in Innovative Programs Our Neighbors to the North are trying out?

The Canadians have chosen two cities to benefit from the Integrated Police/Parole Initiative. This innovative partnership hires police officers to be community corrections liaison officers.

The officers monitor high risk and high need offenders that have transitioned back to the community.

Another interesting partnership is the Community Forum Program which links Correctional Services of Canada and local non-profit organizations. Grant monies are available to the registered non-profits to assist in this program. Some objectives are:

To build strong and safe communities

 To encourage community engagement

To strengthen the community's understanding of safe reentry of offenders

To build community capacity to assist offenders in reintegration

What do you think about these two initiatives? Are you doing anything similar?

New research related to Female Offender Reentry Issues.

Over 39,000 Foreign Nationals Are Housed in US Prisons: What are the costs?
