D.C.The show interviews Dr. Gary Dennis of the Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance regarding the Second Chance Act which assists offenders returning from prison. Provisions of the Second Chance Act include:· Demonstration grants-25 million dollars of approximately 18-20 $750,000 allotments which require a 50 percent match by the jurisdiction for a possible three year time period. Grants must be applied for by April 20, 2009. State and local government can apply.

· Mentoring grants-10 million dollars to non-profit agencies for allotments lasting two years. No match is required. Second Chance Act Grant Solicitation Scheduled to be Released

The Reentry Policy Council, a project of the Council of State Governments Justice Center, has announced the Department of Justice is expected to release on March 23, 2009, the solicitation for Second Chance Act grants to state and local governments. The grants solicitation for non-profit organizations is also expected to released early in 2009.

Grants for Juvenile Justice Systems and At-Risk Youth

The Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) have announced the availability of over $293 million in grant awards targeting at-risk youth and improvements to juvenile justice systems. The stated goal of these awards is to "support community efforts to prevent crime and protect public safety through focusing on the well-being of our nation's young people."

Research on Safe Community Release for Pretrial and Jail Populations

Due: February 15, 2008, 11:59 p.m. eastern time.
NIJ is soliciting applications for research and evaluation of pretrial and jail options that promote cost-effective alternatives to detention and incarceration and protect public safety. The Institute has identified the pretrial and jail release phases of the criminal justice system as an understudied research priority. It is at these stages that case management and other key decisions affecting detention, case outcome, and sentencing are made. Such decisions have important repercussions for offenders, victims and their families at the case level, and for policymakers in the aggregate.

Tough Times Ahead for State and Local Governments?

Competing for a slice of the state or local fiscal pie may get significantly tougher in the coming years, according to a report released today by the United States Government Accountability Office. Absent a change in policy, GAO's simulations find that "large and growing fiscal challenges for the sector will begin to emerge within the next few years," with the downward spiral charted out to the year 2050.

Bulletproof Vest Partnership

There is still time to apply for the Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) through the Office of Justice Programs' Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). They fund up to 50 percent of the cost for vests that are purchased or replaced. Sheriff deputies, police officers, correctional officers, parole and probation officers, prosecutors, and judicial officials are all eligible. The online application is due by 5:00 pm (Eastern Time) on April 30, 2007.
