Controversial Prison Rape Report Published

The long-awaited report by Mark Fleisher and Jessie Krienert, "The Culture of Prison Sexual Violence," has been posted by NCJRS. The report has been the subject of some controversy.

U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) Studies

The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is analyzing the incidence and effects of prison rape. This research focuses on both adult and juvenile corrections facilities and both prisons and jails.

BJS has completed studies to establish baseline data on inmate sexual assaults reported to correctional agencies.

In the fall of 2005, BJS began pretesting the ACASI (Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviews) system for conducting surveys of former inmates.

NIJ's Response to the Prison Rape Elimination Act

The National Institute of Justice has funded research in areas including the impact of sexual victimization in corrections, risk assessment and prevention, and medical and psychological effects of prison sexual victimization. As of April 2006, the agency is reviewing applications from a solicitation to explore sexual violence as it occurs within the context of other violent behavior during incarceration.
