I've tried to find the specifics on minimum requirements in regards to outside yard time and out of cell time. I understand that every inmate must be entitled to 1 hour a day out of their cells for things like showers and this seems to be praticed at most maximum security prisons. Also I have been told that inmates are entitled to 3 or 5 one hour sesions of rec time per week but I am completely unsure of exactly what the law entitles them to have and how that coincides with the one hour per day rule. How many hours of rec time are inmates entitled to recieve per week? How can it be alotted? and does that time count as their hour out of their cell?

The Federal BOP usually treats these as two separate requirements, one for the showers/hygeine etc and one for rec. In those facilities where there are not showers in the inmates cell we normally will offer the inmate shower time, and then will offer the one hour of recreation. You can find some more specifics under the ACA guidelines.

    Sir,

As far as yard time is concerned that is up to a particular facility, weather conditions, staffing. For further information your best bet would be to contact you state DOC, also ACA has a book on standards...
