Any information / feedback on the high turnover rates for correctional officers would be much appreciated. We're also interested any opinions from veteran correctional staff, statistics and or other data about rookie correctional officers being harassed by their own staff. We are planning a revision to my book Vermont C.O. The Truth of Attrition which highlights by experiences as a C.O. with the Vermont D.O.C.. This forum has been helpful in the past with D.O.C. professionals from all over the country responding with many of their own stories of grief in dealing with their own staff. This is a big help to our research. Thank you. R.Mason

Ryan, Good day to you! At our facility there is much turnover. Some decide this is not the line of work they want to be in. Some don't like the pay, the hours, the staff. Said to say some of the higher ups have very little communication or management skills. They go to class once a year, because it looks good on paper, but when they get back to the facility it is business as usual. One thing too, is wheter it is nursing staff or security staff when someone new comes aboard (female) The Captians, Lts. go after them and consequently they quit. Others quit due to the fact how they are spoken to or often dressed down. I could say more about other incidents but I will let them go. Best wishes in your career.  Let me add one thing.....sometimes we get dirty cops.....unfortunately for one reason or another they will bring in drugs, tobacco, cell phones etc. and then there is staff caught in a cell or a bathroom with an inmate.

Thanks for the feedback! Very interesting to hear similar experiences from around the country. May I ask which state your in? If not that's okay. It's just that for my research it helps us to compare eash state as we've found many states with truly similar experiences as our own. Oh yeah, when you say "dirty cops" do you mean that they are hired and actually try to do this illicit things within their first year as a C.O. ? Also when you say "caught in a cell or bathroom" what do you mean specifically? Are they engaging in something sexual? I wasn't sure what you meant by that. Anyway all of the feedback about anything possibly contributing to the high C.O. Turnover rate is always appreicated as we have many experiences that have been cooroborated by others from around the U.S. and this helps us document the phenomenon of the high turnover rate. Thanks again and you should check out my book Vermont C.O. The Truth of Attrition ISBN 978-061-526-7548 on amazon.com. This research will contribute to our revision which will increase by books size by about 30 pages. Thanks so much for your help. Ryan
