As I read Bob Trestman's post on the Successful Corrections Worker Recruitment Strategies 'thread', I was struck by his mention of training staff in 6 Sigma methodology.  This quality improvement process, originally developed for manufacturing environments, focuses on finding and dealing with errors in various types of processes.  I am fascinated by how some organizaitons, in Corrections and outside, can take something developed for a very specific purpose and adapt it for use in other industries/areas.

I would be interested in hearing what other methodologies/processes that Corrections organizations have adapted for use in this field - and what those adaptations look like.  And, Bob, I would like to hear how you are using 6 Sigma more specifically in your agency and what adaptations were made to ensure its applicability to your organization.

We have trained 2 staff at the black belt level in six sigma to lead formal process improvement teams. We have so far targetted: suicide risk reduction, medication line efficiency, and medication against will panels. It has taken little to adapt, other than working to engage uniformed staff as well as health care staff. As we have built this on top of an ongoing QA/QI program supported broadly by uniformed staff and medical staff, this is working fairly well.
