I am looking for policy information related to practices in women's institutions around some of the following areas: *Property lists that were designed specifically for women offenders, particularly if they speak to undergarments, make-up and hygiene items. * Visitation policy, particularly if those policies differ from what is offered men and if there are distinctions made between family visitation as a privilege and/or program issue. * For facilities that do have policy/practice designed for women offenders - have there been ramifications such as... - increased or decreased contraband or disciplinary issuesz/ - what have been some staff responses to implementation of gender-specific policy/practice? Thank you..... Maureen Buell Correctional Program Specialist National Institute of Corrections mbuell@bop.gov

     Hi there,

In california We implemented a separate female property matrix as part of the Gender responsive startegies. it has worked well with having female property and not male based policy. we have instituted many programs that are gender specific and good things have come of it. most recently we will be having a program called girlscouts beyond bars. this will have the inmate with her daughter doing girlscout based activities in the visiting room to bond both the mother and daughter.

We are slso working on gender responsiveness programming in Michigan.  Is there any way we could share what each other has?  Our newest program should be done by early June.  I can share it with you and would love to review what you have.
