I am trying to determine if there are any jails or prisons which maintain different assignment lists for males and females in terms of determining shift assignments other that simple seniority.

    Dr. Cohn:

I'm not sure if I understand your question.......we assign females to supervise female inmates only.  Males are not allowed to supervise female inmate populations.  Female Corrections Officers are allowed to supervise male inmate populations though....

We have a certain number of female positions on all three (8-hour) operational watches.  If these positions cannot be filled by volunteers, they management can assign them to a specific watch to fill these positions.  This is an exception to our normal bidding process.

We have posts that they dont like to have females on due to past incidents but the only thing that I have seen is that they try to balance the number of females on the shifts.  Seniority has something to do with it but the supervisors are very careful not to make it an issue.

We are an all male facility and as far as I know females can hold any position but some are less trouble if the female officers are spared from certain posts.  Keeps the grievences down and doesn't give the inmates anything to complain about...  i.e.. Watching the main shower.

We also assign female Deputies only to our female inmate housing. We do not allow male Deputies on the floor for an extended period of time other than relief if no female Deputy is available. However, again as in Mr Sisneros case, we do allow females to bid and work male housing floors (to include Direct Supervision) as long as we have enough to staff the female housing areas.
