    Good Afternoon,

On behalf of the Miami Dade Corrections Department, we would like to know if other facilities and/or agencies provide coffee to their inmate population as part of the breakfast meal. We are requesting the following information:

    1) Average Inmate Population

    2) If you have discontinued this practice, what impact did this have to your inmate climate? Did your agency have any other positive or negative impact to this change?

    3) How do you feed your inmates? Dining Room style, direct supervision, re-therms, in the cell/unit, etc.

    4) Do you allow inmates to order instant coffee via the commisary process?

    Thank you,

     Sheila Siddiqui

As a behavioral clinician, I have noticed that coffee may be a problem at our facility.  Many of the inmates are drinking excessive amounts or normal amounts.  Some of the consumers then have behavioral or anxiety issues, and end up visiting the mental health department. At Correctional Industrial Facility in Pendleton, Indiana, we do provide unlimited coffee at breakfast.  Coffee can also be purchased via commissary.  I am new to this site, but am very interested in discussing this issue with others who may be concerned.  Thanks. ADP:  Approximately 3,800

We discontinued giving coffee to inmates years ago.  It saved us about $50,000 per year.  Impact was minimal.

We feed the inmates in the dayroom of the dormitory.

We do allow inmates to order instant coffee from commissary...The price is $.28 each.

    Sarasota County

    1) ADP - 1050

    2) We offer a single serving of coffee for breakfast - just above warm

    3) Served locked down in cells and then released to dayroom to eat

    4) We used to offer coffee on commissary when we gave them hot via a "water cooler" in the cellblock. We began having problems with inmates using the 120 degree (the style we had the temp could not be dialed down low enough to our satisfaction) water as a weapon (mostly on each other) so we disconnected that tap and stopped selling coffee, cocoa, and soups on commissary

    Sheila,

    1.  Our average inmate population is only around 65 - 70.  We are avery small jail.

    2.  We discontinued caffinated coffeee 5 - 6 years ago.  We were trying to get the inmates to settle down.  We didn't have any major problems other than the grumbling over no more coffee.

    3.  We feed in the cell blocks

    4.  We do allow the inmates  to buy coffee packets during canteen, but we do not provide any.

    1) ADP is 45 (we are a small BIA jail).

    2) We stopped serving coffee in the morning about 2 years ago. Besides upset inmates there really wasn't a problem.

    3) Feed directly in their cells.

    4) we offer single serving coffee packets and small bags through our commissary provider.

    Hello,

Our average population is 9900 inmates.

We stopped serving coffee years ago with minimal effect to the population.

We also saved in the neighborhood of $50,000 a year.  Also, we do not sell coffee in canteen, because we found that the inmate's were running the water in the showers to get hot water for the coffee.  This resulted in a large waste of resources.

We feed our inmates in various locations, dining room, re-therms and in the cell/unit, depending on classification.

We have a seperate Hot water source in each barracks that is setup by the officers control booth to make the coffee and also other items from Commissary.

    Hope this is helpful...

We discontinued coffe about 8 years ago. Some problems at first but they have long since passed. We do not sell coffee in the commissary. We feed inmates in their housing units and/or holding areas. We serve two (2) meals per day which meet all daily allowance requirements. Our current population is approximately 9200.
