I am looking for feedback on 10 hour work shifts.

We are currently working 12 hour days.

We have worked this know for just under a year.

We were working 8 hour shifts.  My experience with 12 hours has been very positive.  We do have an under current working on 10 hour work days.

    Thank you

We work 12 hours shifts and during the shift there is a rotation after 6 hours.  This is so the same Officer isn't on a post for the entire shift.  What I like is the rotation we are on gives us every other weekend off and its for 3 days...

    ON Monday Tuesday

    Off Wednesday, Thursday

    On Friday, Saturday, Sunday

    Off Monday, Tuesday

    On Wednesday, Thursday

    Off Friday, Saturday, Sunday

and then start all over again.

Shifts run from 6am-6pm... the over lap of shift change is OT but it is monitored closely.

I love it we work 14 days a month and the time off is good.  It is better for the AM shift because you get off and have time with your family.  It is tuff on nights (that is what I work now) but the days off and having everyother weekend 3 days off is very nice.

A ten hour work day is more expensive if you are attempting full coverage (24 hours a day). The relief factor is much higher than the 8 or 12 hour schedule.  We have used 8, 8.5, 10 and 12 hour shifts.  Personally, shifts tend to prefer the 12 hour shift (after they work it for a while).   I completed my Master's Thesis on the topic and surveyed our staff for the raw data....most refuse to give it up after they have been on it for a while; however, most don't want to try it if they have been on an eight hour shift for a while.

Mrs. Allen I work for a very large jail in the Northwest and my-self and sevral others are trying to get togeather a Packet to present to the union board and members on 12 hour shifts. I have worked 12 hour shifts when I worked for the Sheriffs Office in Florida and every one loved it after they started them. I am wondering if you or any one else may have verations on cost of over time and sickleave along with percentages of increase or decrease going from 8 hour shift to 12 hour shifts. I would also like info on how administrations and payrole deal with the issue of the time difrences beween the work weeks.

The biggest deal is the over time the officers like to work and that it will cut back on it. I have no problem with it and i believe the administration will not have a rpoblem with it because that is our biggest problem that we have now. So any inof on dealing with this issue would be great.

I would like thank all who responded.

My main interest was information gathering.  I am not real interested in changing to10hrs.  I have a couple of senior officers who are pursuing this with little head way being made at this time.

With 12hr schedule we have lowered Sick time per officer, Overtime is close to 50% of that we had with 8hr shifts.

Our schedule is the same with the exception that our day starts at 7AM or 7PM. Through the years we have tried several different schedules but it seems the officers do prefer 12 hour shifts. Coverage was always the issue with 8 or 10 hour shifts, and there was no uniformity so you could have 3,4, or even 5 officers on duty depending upon which day it was.
