I am looking for some guideline as to how long we are required to keep medication administration records. Our facility is in Kansas but have not had any luck finding legislative guidelines nor have I gotten a response from out state department of health and enviroment. All help will be appreciated. By the way we are a paper system.

    Thanks, Greg

I work within California Dept of Corr.  Our MARs are kept within the Unit Health Record (UHR) itself.  Interestingly enough, it stays at the institution where the inmate was discharged until the inmate comes back. (Our recidivism rate is 70%.)  In (rare) cases where the inmate expired, the UHR stays at the institution indefinitely.  I have requested charts for review dating back greater than 5 years, and the UHR is still there.

By the way, we are also paper currently.  So, I don't know how long this "system" could conceivably be maintained.

Log on, if interested, provide inpute, feedback, suggestions. No risk. No problems. We're on YOUR team. Fix the system.
