Hi there everyone. I have developed a training class titled Women in Corrections: A Career Survival Guide, but I am looking for any input from other professionals as to what topics to cover. The training is for cross gender supervision. So far, I have included the following:

    • Personality types of women that are victimized in general
    • Advice on how to deal with the negative aspects of Corrections (cat calls, compliments, masturbation, etc)
    • What to do, What not to do tips
    • Developing healthy relationships with staff
    • Negative consequences associated with dating staff members
    • sexual misconduct
    • History of women in Corrections
    • Setting boundaries

Does anyone have any topics that they think should be added. I have written this based on my experiences, but everyone has different experiences. Resources, tips, criticism....all welcome! Thanks everyone!

Hello Tracy, I commend your efforts.  Its a large topic.  Following are some considerations although am sure you will find additional topics.

    • Safety
    • Minority female officers
    • Job opportunities, promotions, tenure
    • The physical requirements of the job and related issue
    • Cross-gender searches and surveillance

    Hope this helps.

Thanks so much! I will add the minority female officer factor for sure. Great input. I thought about the leadership aspect, but decided to do an entirely different class for that topic, but I could definately mention promotion opportunities in this course. I sure appreciate your input....it ALL helps! Have a great day Sobem.

dynamics between male and female staff members

safety (females don't have the brute strengrh men do, along those lines)

     Thank you

Great ideas! I have a piece in there about communication differences between men and women, so women understand that men usually are blunt and to the point, where women like to beat around the bush...per say. I have a lot of the safely issues in the dos and don't section. I will send you a copy of what I have so far! If you can think of any more "tips" to add into the presentation, let me know. Thanks for your help.

like your idea of educating female officers into a profession that has been primarily dominated by men. Having taught female and male officers, I have learned the hard way that one needs two different teaching methods. Would be glad to provide "lessons learned" from both for you. Can you provide a copy of what you already have?? Thanks, again CPL Peter Martinez, Sr. Detention Bureau - El Paso County Sheriff's Office 12501 East Montana El Paso, Texas 79938

Our agency recently had an officer who is female go out for stress management attributed to receiving an intense and graphic threatening letter from a  prisoner. Granted such an act or act could happen in a hostage situation, but it is also something one should nothave todeal with inthe general course of performing duties, that is receiving a letter of such henious threats.

I would be interested in seeing what you come up with.

this is a very developmental initiative.giving women the chance to venture into this field mostly dominated by men is encouraging!do you think it is relevant to add in your topics a clause on drug substances and ways to handle the occurrence of contact just as an all round informatory measure? ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Tracy,

First let me commend you on your effort.  It is a huge undertaking and certainly a valuable resource.

One topic that you may want to consider is "balancing personal and professional life."   The stressors involved in raising a family, managing your home, being a wife, volunteering in your community, "soccer mom" and then working shift work in an inherently dangerous environment can be overwhelming especially to new hires.  Just a thought.

Good luck with the training and if you get a chance please let us know how your first presentation went.  My thoughts are that the class will provide you with a host of other topics and you will be able to build on what you have in place.

Love the idea. I guess balance is mentioned throughout the lesson plan, but there isn't direct information on it...yet. I will add your suggestion. Thanks!

Tracy, I have input regarding your title for the course. Its catchy and may draw for participants. But it sets a rather pessimistic tone. Hopefully it wont drive the rest of your content. It suggest you ladies are working merely to survive. In my opinion ladies are making tremendous contributions in the business. They can and i think in some cases have great careers. I tend to think much is gained from an optimistic perspective than otherwise. With all that said, my point is be careful to not set too pessimistic a tone in your material. I suggest optimism.
