The St. Louis County Department of Justice Services would like to know what type of footwear is issued to your inmates by your institution.  Currently we issue a very cheap tennis shoe that does not withstand a washing nor last very long for inmates incarcerated a period of time.  We are looking for options for purchasing and distributing footwear.

Here's a reply from our Commissary Sergeant:

If inmates who are being processed into the jail have unacceptable footwear, we provide them with shower slides and charge their commissary accounts. Sentenced inmates are issued boots, although we do not wash them. Unsentenced inmates retain their own footwear, if it is acceptable, and we do wash some on occasion. Commissary sells an inexpensive and low quality slip on canvass shoe, without laces, that inmates can purchase. The inmates can also purchase shower slides through the commissary.

We issue inexpensive slide on canvas shoes without laces, or inexpensive sandals / shower slides, depending what we have in stock in their size. If an inmate destroys the footwear, they are charged for them and issued a new pair. We do not wash them but use a disenfecting spray to sanitize them

All inmates are issued shower shoes, cheap ones, Bob Barker I'm sure.  They can buy sneakers off commissary.  Trustees get issued work sneakers and/or boots.
