I am attempting to learn about the impact of variable shifts (example 12 hour shifts, 10 hour shifts....) in correctional agencies across the country. The implementation; issues that developed before, during and after; overall impact on staffing and operations;states or municipalities that use varied schedules; and other related issues as they apply to FLSA. The information received will be used in a current project within my department as part of a management development course. Thank you in advance for any direction that can be supplied in this area.

I can highly recommend this book from the Institute of Police Technology and Management:

    http://www.iptm.org/webstore/p-68-managers-guide-to-alternative-work-schedules.aspx

Everything you want to know about shift schedules is contained in here.

Also, contact Rod Miller at rod@correction.org.  He's done some outstanding work on Jails Staffing Analysis.

State of Maine uses 12 hours shifts with a combination of 8.5 hours shifts at three of its adult facilities. Maine Correctional Center has been using them for seven years. Morale up, sick time down. I can send copies of our days shift schedule and night shift schedules via email.

We do not have 24/7 clinics. Currently working 5-8 hour shifts. Interested in 4- 10 hour shifts. Would appreciate any documentation to support the pluses of this arrangement; i.e employee satisfaction=retention and fewer absences, increased productivity; and reduction or even elimination of overtime, etc. Please send copy of thesis if applicable to 10 hours shifts rather than 12 hour shifts. Thanks.

If anyone has an example for an example of 10 hour shifts on a 24/7 post, we're trying to negotiate with our management to get our officers off of 5 8's and to be doing 4 10's, any kind of info would be helpful. My email address is jemcguire@bop.gov
