Hello. I am interested in how to determine bed vacancy rates for all types of facilities (jails, prisons, etc) both adults and juveniles. Is there some type of standard and who decides this standard? Can you provide a reference???  How do other states determine this?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide me!!!

    Sincerely, Amy Williams

    Hey there,

If you are you talking about the a per diem rate. I always used our budget divided by the number of beds or inmates in the facility and I came up with my dollar figure. Now there were times that the Sheriff had set a certain rate due to certain circumstances. I hope this has been helpful. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you so much for your reply!!!

I was actually referring to the capacity rate of the facililty.  For instance, number of empty beds divided by the number of beds in the facility.  I have discovered that there was no vacancy rate standard in 1995.  This may hold true today.  Most of my research found that many facilities are usually at maximum capacity.

If anyone has any other information, I would be glad to hear it!

    Thanks again!!!

    Sincerely,
