The New Jersey Correctional Staff Training Academy is currently researching the idea of instructing Unarmed Defense in small blocks of instruction throughout the State Basic course rather than one continuous week of 8 hr. blocks of instruction. Can anyone provide feedback (positive or negative) regarding experience of implimentation in such a manner. Points of interest would include:

Trainee feedback, Instructor feedback, effectiveness, information retention, sheduling

We developed our own self defense program.

We sent a master instructor to SPEAR, Contolled Force, Mixed Martial Arts and PPCT. Our Master instructors work with facility lead instructors who work with instructors. It  [our self defense program] is an 8 hour program and the reviews have been outstanding.  Sessions are audited yearly. We overtrain instructors by teaching them 5 days. We also require all instructors to take a 4 day class on how to teach [basic theory adult learning etc].

We created a Master Instructor policy and this will be used for all security disciplines such as FN303, baton etc. A Master Instructor is appointed for each of these disciplines. We have moved from A-Team from to Control Tactics and Self Defense.

Our 11 week training academy contains 9 different defensive tactics classes (8 hrs each). The are spread throughout the 11 weeks, generally with one a week after the first couple of weeks. We have never done it any other way and it works out well to allow students to get over their sore muscles and bruises in between classes, as well as avoiding information overload.
