Does any state or jurisdiction have caseload caps or limits in place by statue, administrative rule or policy for their probation/parole officers?  If not, why not, and if so, on what basis are the caps assigned?

     Thanks, Brad

Wisconsin has caps that are established by the state legeslature.  It is more for a determination for agent compensation, authorization of overtime, and for postion allocation to work areas and for justifyiing new postions to maintain a desireable staff to offender ratio. It really has no teeth to control or manage the true case or work load of the agent but does set some standards.  Caseloads are determined by points established for the variety of offender classifications, which are based on an Objective risk aand needs assessments.  ie;  2 caseloads points for each max offender supervised, 1 for mediums, etc

Thanks Tom.  Any help you can give me on what statue would be appreciated.  I searched the web site for Wisconsin but can't find the right section.

WI DOC has a web site but I can not tell you where the administrative code or state statute can be located on it.  However, I do know if you call the DOC Public Information office at 608-240-5060 or the DOC office of Legal Counsel at 608-240-5035 they will be able to help you with direction through the web site or through copies of the relevant documents. Good luck
