    Hi all and happy holiday,

I am looking to train staff to implement offender case management within a jail setting, with an emphasis on assessment, developing an intervention plan, and then networking for successful reentry.  Can anybody suggest some basic training or material by which I can train staff?

    Thanks,

    Joel

Hello Joel, did you get any response from your post yet?  I have a similar question and wanted to learn from responses you got.  Let me know. Sobem

    Sobem,

No, none.  However, I don't think the issue is too difficult to learn on your own.  You may want to download a document from Dept of Labor called Prisoner Reentry Toolkit.  It has some good forms and case studies.

    Best,

    JB

Hi Joel, How much time do you have and how extensive of a training are you looking for?  I have a basic intro trainer outline that I pulled together for a recent training I did with prison staff around this topic.  I'd be happy to share it, if you like.  Its not a fully scripted curriculum and is customized to Maine's context, but I'd be glad to forward it, if you think it would help.

    Hello Erica,

I have offenders for a maximum of 6 - 7 months, being a jail based program.  I'd like to see the material you've developed if you think it worthwhile.  Our focus is to prepare the offender for transition - so that Case Management in my thinking is really comprised of setting up a plan of action to prepare for release and then "brokering" the necessary services from the community that our department does not provide.

    Thanks!

I just received two books concerning this topic.  One is titled "The Jail Administrator's Toolkit for Reentry" May of 2008 and the other is "Life After Lockup Improving Reentry from Jail to the Community" May of 2008.  The folks responsible for these publications are Departement of Correction and Rehabilitation, Montgomery County, MD, Urban Institute, John Jay College and Bureau of Justice Assistance.  According to the letter that I received with the materials you can access the information at www.urban.org/projects/reentry-roundtable/roundtable9.cfm.

The information I have received is outstanding at minimum.  You may also want to research the Second Chance Act that was signed by President Bush on April 9, 2008 that includes jails in funding and research on reentry practices.

    Good Luck!
