am currently a Unit Manager at the Federal Prison in McCreary County, KY. One of my collateral duties is that I am the Crisis Support Team Leader. Additionally, through the Kentucky Department of Public Health, I was recently trained as a Community Crisis Responder. I am also involved in suicide prevention in the State of Kentucky. Specifically, I am pleased to be on the Awareness Committee for the Kentucky State Suicide Prevention Planning Group. This group was formulated by the state and recognized by the governor per legislation to put together our states suicide prevention plan. I am also a Certified Question, Persuade, Refer(QPR) GateKeeper Instructor. A suicide prevention technique, which is very appropriate for all adults and teenagers. Although my efforts are supported by my employer, my efforts and training in suicide prevention are of a volunteer nature. My only motivation is to help save lives. I sincerely believe that suicide is our nations most preventable cause of death .

I have been fortunate to have been able to provide suicide awareness presentations/training to the Bureau of Prisons, KY DOC, Indiana Correctional Association, and most recently for staff at a CCA Jail facility in Indianapolis. I also do local organizations, colleges, and other appropriate groups. I am happy to say that the response and evaluations from these efforts has been excellent.

I have been working in corrections for the past 30 years, with the past 14 being with the BOP. However, Suicide prevention is my passion, due to the suicide death of my 16 year old son in 2002. In my presentation, I not only stress prevention at work, but staff and their families.

I am requesting you forward this mail to anyone you deem appropriate. My presentations and training are hands-on. I do not believe Suicide Prevention training's should be totally computer based. I wish to offer other correctional agencies and organizations my information...thanks for your thoughts and considerations....Bill

As a former Bureau of Prisons Regional Psychology Administrator and coordinator of their national suicide prevention program for 14 years, I fully agree with Mr. McCreary that suicide risk management in prisons and jais begins with training. Since retiring from the Bureau of Prisons in 2001, I have worked with more than 20% of state departments of correction in areas related to suicide and mental health issues. I have also provided numerous workshops on correctional suicide to nationally recognized organizations such as the American Correctional Association, National Commission on Correctional Health Care, the American Psychological Association, and many others. As part of my clinical workshops, I offer participants free access to a structured worksheet for conducting suicide assessments that is based on the material contained in my book on suicide assessment. To date, many clinicians have found this worksheet useful and some states have incorporated aspects of the material into their policy development. I will be more than happy to send copies of this worksheet to anyone in corrections who may be looking for a user-friendly assessment tool to help them collect information about potentially suicidal inmates. Suicide Awareness and Prevention is now, and will continue to be, one of the top ten issues for correctional staff.  I have seen the statistic that the rate of suicide in small jails is 600% higher than large jails.  I attribute this to a lack of training.  Your hands-on presentation and training is very intriguing.  I am very involved in correctional training in the northern Ohio region.  Would you be willing to share your materials with me?  We have a annual retraining in suicide prevention and awareness, and I am always looking for ways to improve the classes.
