Each year, the Minnesota Community Corrections Association and the Advisory Task Force on Women Offenders host an annual training for corrections professionals who work with women offenders.  For the upcoming conference 2007, there were several suggestions to cover mental health issues and women offenders, as it pertains to a pathway to criminal behavior, an obstacle in community supervision or prison adjustment and/or a barrier to rehabilitation and reintegration. Without having a specific topic in mind, the Conference Committee is searching for a presenters, locally or nationally, that have a specialty in these areas and/or train on these topics. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Please send interest, ideas or comments to Kelley Heifort, Conference Co-Chair, at kheifort@co.doc.state.mn.us.

Hi my name is Rachel and I actually writing a research paper on women offenders in the US. It mostly focuses on how women offenders convicted of violent crimes has skyrocketed in the past century and im wondering if anyone has an idea or reasoning behind it. im stuck with a lot of statistics rather than anyones belief on how this has come about. In relation to men I am trying to find a way to prove that women are not becoming more and more evil or more easily influenced these days but are being treated harsher by the court system. if you have any info i would greatly appreciate it. Rachel Michel (kooliojo15@aol.com) thank you

    KelleyH:
Thank you all so much for your posted responses and individual replies.  We have decided to take another direction with our conference this year.  Through an experiencial learning, conference participants will discover first-hand the transitional barriers that exist for women involved in the criminal justice system.  Half of the conference day will be spent in this active role-playing and the second half will be dedicated to professional empowerment for change and community-capacity building, along with a resource fair.  We're very excited about the opportunities for participants to be motivated in their work through empathy-building and personal change.
