Does anyone know of any programs and/or funding opportunities for community based organizations to provide services (support, mental health) to children whose parents are incarcerated?

You can try the Center for Children of Incarcerated Parents at http://www.e-ccip.org

the Urban Institute http://www.urban.org/   and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (use google search engine) or the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention at http://ojjdp.ncjrs.org/

    Hi Dawn

PILLARS in New Zealand, has been running children's programmes for 16 years. We also run a home based programme for families of prisoners + a reintegration of prisoners back into the family, which we have been running for 18 years. Up until recently, we ran groups for about 120 kids but recently dropped that as it was very time consuming for staff and there was no research to back it worked, so we have continued with our Children of Promise Mentoring Programme which we have been running for over 10 years - before mentoring programmes for children or prisoners became the flavour of the month. What we have done is that we have combined both programmes and the parents now buy in to the mentoring programme and we have a process of follow up.

You are welcome to visit us. The joys of New Zealand is it is small enough to run and evaluate programmes. Most of our clients are no further than 10 km away from our Centre. It is also a beautiful country.

You can visit our website at www.pillars.org.nz but it is due to be revamped as it is very borning with heaps of information and we want it more inspiring.

     Good luck with your request

    Verna

We found that by reviewing our community programs that we could provide services to this population of children and that many times new money isn't needed.  We are from a frontier county in Oregon and our group is known as the Malheur Partnership for children of Incarcerated Parents.  The Childrens Justice Alliance in Oregon is another good connection for finding information on this subject.  We are in the process of establishing a Relief Nursery and through PathFinders of Oregon we provide a Community, Jail and Prison program for parents that are incarcerated and the community program involves the children.  I believe a big portion of this work can be done without additional resources, just rethink the way you currently do business.  Always ask the question "And How are The Children?"  Hopefully someday we can all say "The Children are Well!"
