Liability issues related to correctional training programs are discussed in this on line program, originally presented at the International Association of Correctional Training Personnel's 21st Annual Trainers' Conference, and at the National Partnership for Juvenile Services' 11th Joint Conference.

Readers will be able to:

Analyze training programs to determine if they are legally defensible;
Determine the need to acquire copyright permission for material used;
Identify alternative delivery strategies applicable to a particular setting;
Apply the elements of a good documentation system to their agency; and
Analyze their current system and develop a plan to correct any deficiencies.

Mock Prison Riot

The Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization (OLETC), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and the National Corrections and Law Enforcement Training and Technology Center (NCLETTC) annually host a Mock Prison Riot on the grounds of the former West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville. The purpose of the riot is to showcase emerging corrections and law enforcement technologies and to give corrections officers and tactical team members an opportunity to use and evaluate emerging technologies in riot training scenarios.

2008 Innovative Technologies for Community Corrections Conference, June 9-11, 2008, Denver, Colorado

Each year the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center's Rocky Mountain Regional Center sponsors a conference and exhibition to convey technology information to community corrections professionals. The goal of the conference is to spotlight the innovative use of technology in community corrections and to introduce technologies on the horizon that may enhance an agency's mission performance.

Training Opportunity - Thinking for a Change Facilitator Training

NE Region under NIC's Regional Training Initiative will present Thinking for a Change Facilitator Training April 21-24, 2008. This is a 32-hour advanced level training program that will prepare participants to facilitate offender groups utilizing the Thinking for a Change cognitive skills development program. The training is designed for Probation, Parole, Counselors and other staff responsible for leading offender groups in the Thinking for a Change program. The training will be held at the William Green Federal Building, 600 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA, GSA Conference Room 2A. Registration is required. The National Institute of Corrections has developed a number of special "Projects" web pages to inform the field of its current activities and initiatives and to provide valuable information and resources to practitioners.

Improving correctional agencies' capacity to train staff is the focus of the new Training Design and Development Projects Page. Developed for training directors, trainers, curriculum developers, field training officers, and those who are responsible for training, the site lists free library resources, links, and web referrals on pages dedicated to training management, instructional design, training delivery, networking, and other NIC services.

It's not too early to begin making plans to attend this year's IACTP Trainers' Conference October 19 through October 22 in Tempe, Arizona. This is your opportunity to attend exceptional workshops, network with your peers, and share your knowledge. IACTP is looking for correctional training practitioners, educators, researchers, and advocates to present workshops at the conference. If you are interested in presenting a workshop, complete the Workshop Proposal On line Form and submit it no later than May 31.

Another important aspect of the conference is the opportunity to recognize those who have excelled in the training arena through the IACTP Awards of Excellence in Correctional Training. The Texas Institute of Behavioral Research (IBR) at Texas Christian University is a national research center for addiction treatment studies. Over 400 assessment and intervention forms, manuals, newsletters, presentations and special reports are available for free download. Major resources developed over the past 15 years fall into four categories: risk assessments, needs and performance assessments, life-skills interventions, and conceptual frameworks for treatment processes.

Research conducted at the IBR is intended to generate and disseminate knowledge that impacts state and national policy decisions in the addictions field. Incident Commander: A Crisis Training Simulation

Incident Commander is available free of charge to all authorized public safety agencies. Developed through a grant award from the National Institute of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Incident Commander is a PC-based software simulation that models real-world situations within a community, allowing for training at the management level for a critical incident. Incident Commander utilizes the Incident Command System and is NIMS (National Incident Management System) compliant.

Users can order the Incident Commander CD through the National Criminal Justice Reference Service web site. Orders are limited to 16 copies per order and NCJRS will charge shipping and handling. An order for 1 CD will be a $5 S&H fee. Effectively Managing Sex Offenders In The Community

The Center for Sex Offender Management (CSOM) is a national project that supports state and local jurisdictions in the effective management of sex offenders under community supervision. CSOM was established in 1997 and is sponsored by the Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, in collaboration with the National Institute of Corrections, State Justice Institute, and the American Probation and Parole Association.

CSOM has publications available for download in the critical areas of sex offender assessment, supervision, treatment, community notification and registration, reentry, recidivism, and much more. CSOM's goals are further carried out through information exchange, training and technical assistance, and support to select Resources Sites and OJP grantees.

On Wednesday, August 22, 2007, and Thursday, August 23, 2007, the National Institute of Corrections will unveil via satellite/Internet broadcast a new training strategy for facilitators to conduct public and media relations training in their regional locations. This training strategy encompasses a "blended learning" approach using various distance technologies and classroom based media interview simulations. These Interviewing Practicals include equipment normally used (e.g., lights, cameras, and microphones) by the media.

How can you help? Become a facilitation team of 3-5 persons to conduct skill-building training sessions in their regional locations. The team should consist of at least one person who has completed NIC's Public and Media Relations training program or who has experience as a Public Relations Officer, a trainer, and a technology person. The team will organize and facilitate the practical interviewing sessions for NIC's new training series.

Using Motivational Interviewing to Change Offender Behavior

This publication provides correctional professionals with both a solid grounding in the principles behind motivational interviewing (MI) and a practical guide for applying these principles in their everyday dealings with offenders. Team Building Training

Come and experience an excellent training opportunity, STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING EFFECTIVE WORK TEAMS, sponsored by NIC's NE Region and the West Virginia Department of Corrections Training Academy. This 36 hour training program provides participants with strategies for developing, implementing, managing, and evaluating work teams within a work unit and agency wide. It covers individual and group leadership techniques, group dynamics, work team characteristics, and ways to overcome organizational barriers to team development. Most of all, it employs highly interactive and experiential strategies that leaves participants with an exciting, lasting training experience in team building.

When: July 23-27, 2007

8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day, except for Friday which will end by 11:30 am.
