DACUM is an acronym for Developing a Curriculum, a quick yet highly valid job analysis technique used to determine the competencies that should be included in a training curriculum for a specific occupation. In addition to curriculum development, DACUM profiles can be used in several other ways. They are used
- to develop accurate job descriptions,
- to evaluate if existing programs provide training for the competencies needed for today's jobs,
- as a pretest to determine the training needs of staff,
- to develop competency-based post tests for training,
- to develop auxiliary components to the training program such as computer-based training and video tapes,
- for developing performance evaluations, and
- as the foundation for developing a complete training program for a specific job in the correctional system.
A keyword search of the National Institute of Corrections digital library using terms such as job analysis or job descriptions will locate over 30 DACUM competency profiles. In addition, the state of Nebraska, the Vermont Department of Human Resources, and Eastern Kentucky University have placed job specifications for hundreds of occupations, including corrections positions, on their websites.
