Prison Issues in the Criminal Justice Field

How deadly are HIV and AIDS in today's prisons?

How many of you remember the early years of HIV and AIDS in our prisons? The disasters with policy issues and medical processing? Some of us were almost fired for suggesting bleach being available to inmates say nothing about condom availability. When we review this just released report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the story of prevalence and death due to AIDS and HIV related illnesses has changed for most states. Click here for the report "HIV in Prisons, 2004". The progress in screening and treatment has changed dramatically in the past decade and lives are being saved. This report highlights:

  • Rate of AIDS-related deaths in State prisons decreased in 2004
  • Nearly half of HIV-infected State prison inmates at year 2004 end were in 3 states: New York, Florida and Texas.
  • During 2004, 20 states reported a decrease in HIV-positive prisoners and 24 States and the Federal Bureau of Prisons reported an increase. What factors contribute to these differences?
  • 20 states test all inmates for HIV at admission or while in prison

This critical document includes state by state charts on HIV.
