The United Kingdom's International Centre for Prison Studies has published a document called: "Prisons and their communities: testing a new approach" by Vivien Stern. SEE ATTACHMENT BELOW.
This is a story of how projects that offenders could work on might actually meet a need in the community. It turned into a concept called the Restorative Prison Project. It questions issues and values of "work" in prisons for the sake of working versus contributing to a community. A story of how the paradigm of isolated prisons and prisoners become part of the community within the walls. Concepts include:
- Prisons and victims
- Resolving conflicts
- Restorative principles in a prison setting
- Challenging how prisons are managed on a daily basis; a "restorative regime in a prison"
Will this work in the US? What do you think?
