Sexual Victimization in Local Jails Reported by Inmates, 2007

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has published a report on sexual victimization in local jails. The data for the 2007 National Inmate Survey (NIS) was collected from a sample of 40,419 inmates between April and December, and surveyed 282 local jails.

Highlights:

  • About 1.6% of inmates (12,100, nationwide) reported an incident involving another inmate, and 2.0% (15,200) reported an incident involving staff.
  • Inmate-on-inmate victimization occurred most often in the victim's cell (56%); staff-on-inmate victimization occurred in a closet, office, or other locked room (47%).
  • An estimated 5.1% of female inmates, compared to 2.9% of male inmates, said they had experienced one or more incidents of sexual victimization.

This data was collected as required by the the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (P.L.-108-79).

I always thought rape was against the law weather it be in jail or not. I think this article should be going global. And prosecute these animals that are victimizing the inmates. Anyway we look at it RAPE is RAPE!!! It just seems so revolting and more animalistic in the prisons. I hope something can be done to stop this disgusting act.   thank you christine

It is shame to say but inmates don't have to rape in the prison system.  When inmates can request their cell mates for the purpose of "relationships", what good is PREA!!

Inmates with HIV can have sex without being prosecuted.  Prison is not prison anymore, inmate have more rights than free world citizens.

Hopefully PREA will educate both the staff and inmate population that rape and/or sexual acts will not be tolerated any longer.  joanetta tv, The elemination of any one element in it self will not stop any illegal activity as I am sure you know but hopefully if all partys involved enforce the standards written maybe, just maybe things will improve.

Just because male and female offenders are incarcerated, does not mean that they have to be subjected to this unfair treatment.  They already have plenty enough of barriers to overcome, once they get out and/or are locked up like caged animals.  They don't have to be allowed to be preyed upon.   Inmates currently have to pay "room & board" back to the state, therefore that being the case, every person that pays for a safe haven, should be policed within to provide the safety all mankind needs.  Afterall, they are still human.
