More PREA Standards Released For Comment

The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission has released draft standards for lockups, community corrections, and juvenile facilities, which are available at www.nprec.us for public comment from June 16th through August 1st.  The first set of draft standards, addressing adult prisons and jails, and supplemental standards for facilities that hold immigration detainees, will continue to be available for comment through July 7th.

While I think that the changes reflected in the proposed standards are long over-due,  the Commission has over-estimated the resources that are available to state prisons in this time of financial crisis.  While the concepts need to be maintained, I feel that the Commission needs to be more realistic in understanding the resouces available to most prison systems, and with that understanding, tailor the guidelines so that they can be imposed successfully.
