Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)

The Prison Rape Elimination Act and Lesbian/Gay/Bi-sexual/Transgender/Questioning Individuals

The passage of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) has raised awareness in the criminal justice system of the unique mental, physical and safety needs of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and questioning) individuals and the legal requirements to provide an environment free from sexual violence and harassment by detainees and staff. The following links will provide readers with an overview of the issues surrounding terminology, housing, mental and physical health care, programming and equal treatment.

I think that the article is great.  The work that you are doing is great.  You bring what is done in the dark to the light.  But, my question is, how is the protection for the vunerable really carried out.  Men and women are raped everyday.  Children are placed in adult facilities, with adult charges.  What is being done in a realistic way to stop this atrocity.  Prison rape is one of the worst crimes that is being allowed to continue to florish, just because some people feel that the victim is getting what they deserve because of their crime.  I think that the time is paying for the crime, but no one should have to face such brutal and humiliating acts while doing the time for a crime that they committed.  I am a social work major and i feel very strongly about this issue.  I do not like the strong preying upon the weak.  I do not like injustice.  I want to see something done in a real way.  Because, i know that while everyone is talking about it, someone is living their worst nightmare.  I want to see some real steps taken across the board to put an end to this crime and to see that the vunerable are being protected.

I think it is a great article. But what about the second part of Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 Staff can not have sex with inmates even if it is consensual. We are losing so many employees yearly for this sexual misconduct. Right now Prison Officials solution is to terminate. We need to do more in the education field.
