Both resources were created jointly by the Urban Institute, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Correction and Rehabilitation.

Maryland's Correctional Education Transition Mobile Unit was recently featured at the National Defender/Workforce Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. The Mobile Unit provides transitional information and library services for inmates in the pre-release system in Maryland. The unit, which was designed and is operated by the Maryland State Department of Education, travels across the Maryland to prepare men and women for release from incarceration into the community and employment.

Maryland's Correctional Education Transition Mobile Unit

Featured at National Defender/Workforce Conference

WHO: Representatives, Maryland State Department of Education - Correctional Education Program

WHAT: The Correctional Education Transition Mobile Unit, the first of its kind that provides transitional information and library services for inmates in the pre-release system, will be onsite for tours during the National Defender/Workforce Development Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. The mobile unit, which was designed and is operated by the Maryland State Department of Education, travels across the Maryland to prepare men and women for release from incarceration into the community and employment.

Upon release from incarceration, inmates will have the skills to demonstrate the knowledge and job skills they have obtained through education, library services, and occupational training while incarcerated; use effective job search and retention strategies to successfully reintegrate into society; access available career planning, library and community resources to advance in their chosen professions and community transition; and develop and use effective decision-making techniques to achieve career goals.

The Mobile Units are co-sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education - Correctional Education Program; Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services; and the Maryland Correctional Enterprises.

Update on the MSDE Correctional Education Transition Mobile Unit

As reported in this blog post, the Maryland State Department of Education Correctional Education Transition Mobile Unit is operational and is now making site visits to prerelease centers in Maryland. The website for the mobile unit can be found here. Photos for the ribbon cutting ceremony can be found here. If you don't live in Maryland, you will be able to see the mobile unit during the 2008 Defendant/Offender Workforce Development conference in Cleveland.

Mission: The mission of Maryland State Department of Education Re-entry Mobile Unit is to provide community information, education training and employment resources for inmates who are about to return to the community.

The Re-entry Mobile Unit will have resources in a variety of formats to offer:

Library resources
Career options
Current employment possibilities
Parenting information
ESL materials
Community services directories
Resume writing skills
Health information
Licensing information
Information on how to access the Internet for jobs, to get GED, to find housing, and to get homework help for school aged children

The The Re-entry Mobile Unit was initiated as a cooperative venture with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), and Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE). It is equipped with a remote satellite that will not impact the institution. The materials and technology will be for inmate use, the only staff being allowed access being the mobile operator.
