Introducing the Maryland State Department of Education Re-entry Mobile Unit (info and pictures)!

From Diana Bailey:

Mission:  The mission of Maryland State Department of Education Re-entry Mobile Unit is to provide community information, education training and employment resources for inmates who are about to return to the community.

The Re-entry Mobile Unit will have resources in a variety of formats to offer:

  • Library resources
  • Career options
  • Current employment possibilities
  • Parenting information
  • ESL materials
  • Community services directories
  • Resume writing skills
  • Health information
  • Licensing information
  • Information on how to access the Internet for jobs, to get GED, to find housing, and to get homework help for school aged children

The The Re-entry Mobile Unit was initiated as a cooperative venture with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), and Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE).  It is equipped with a remote satellite that will not impact the institution.  The materials and technology will be for inmate use, the only staff being allowed access being the mobile operator.

This is great!  It needs to be used in conjunction with outside programs and agencies that provide services to these inmates. There should have been more hits for child support, housing, no Identification, job experience or skills, substance abuse treatment, and healthcare issues. These are the problems we see continualy and are  normally overlooked until we ask the questions or check on things that might have them rearrested or create a problem upon release. I would like to talk to someone about the Men's Center collaborating with this project from the outside. Please contact me at 410-614-5353

I agree with Leon, this is great and an excellent idea! I was thinking of a way to implement a program such as this for inmates re-entering into the community and was thinking of trying to get access to the pre-release centers to make some of these same services available to the inmates before they are released.

This mobile unit is a great idea. I would like more information on how to start one or more of these mobile units or I was thinking of opening an office that maybe the inmates may be able to get a pass to come to my office for the services so that they can make a better transition back into society.  Services such as getting identification, job referrals, etc.

Please contact me with information. 443-604-5166

It is the Maryland State Department of Education who designed and operates the Transition Mobile Unit.  Other agencies are partners in inmate referrals.

If you would like to speak to me directly how we are doing this, please call @ 410-767-0531.  We will also be on display @ the DOWD conf in Cleveland.

I had the pleasure of touring the Mobile Unit as a One-Stop Center model.  This is a great concept.  Is this still in operation?
