re: 2008 Kids Count Data Book

I received the Kids Count Essay and Data Brief and it is a solid document. Living in the #39 ranked state, it wasn't good news but at least I'm not in DC. (it's just humor, DC! But, really, look at where DC would be ranked on these categories if they were ranked. A teen death rate twice of most other areas and four times higher than the #1. Run kids, while you have the chance!)

I hope my local legislators look at it and work to improve the lives of children in this state!

I also work with male youths from 13-19 in a detention facility and am constantly on the look out for speakers and employment initiatives to lead my students in my career skills class towards rehabilitation. Most of the time the poverty is the overriding impediment towards rehabilitation.

i belive the truancy methods are not working. i agree that education should be consider most important by every student and belive that sudent who skip classes are being let off to easy. most student i know have people forage thier comunity service and well some dont mind even paying a fine!

I work with incarcerated, 16 -22. I am very concerned that most of these youth are economically and socially underprivileged and unable to pay for legal representation, in my city they are offered the most incompetent public defenders available. Thus, they are seldom well represented in court and many who have the capacity for de-programing and re-direction do not get that chance because they are sent to prison. I would like to see entries on this subject as I know that I can't be the only youth worker so frustrated as I am.

Great article and we need to across this country fix laws so minors are not charged as adults in this country for acts like consensual sex etc. My son story is horrifying and at sixteenhe was charged as a adult and no longer has a opportunity to live a normal teenager life as he is beingmade to register for life by law. These cases need to be reviewed and put back in juvenile courts much like the Genarlo case where they are misdemeanors so these boys ahve chances to live and work and be productive. Juveniles are products of their environment. It is not them, but the adults interfacing with them whom we need to hold accountable. What is a joke and getting out of control is the massive lock up we have of younsters, which offers nothing in the way of help but only provides an environment where the LEARN criminal, anti-social behavior. Not only is this a "joke' and out of control, but its one of the biggest human rights abuses we have in this country (not to mention the number of laws broken within a broken system.) As is said so often, we can't arrest and incarcerate out of this problem. If we spent just half as much on family strengthening supports as we do on the prison system, we would not have the growing mess we have today. And fear-based campaigns that portray youth as monsters are only successful in scaring the general public, woefully unaware of the abuses within the system, into draconion policies that serve to do nothing but exacerbate the problem.
