The Southern Region of the National Institute of Corrections Academy’s Regional Training Initiative (RTI) presents:

STAFF SUPERVISION FOR CORRECTIONS PROFESSIONAL

Date: August 18-22, 2008

Hosted by the South Carolina Department of Corrections, Division of Training, Training Academy,4446 Broad River Road, Columbia, South Carolina

Using an interactive, experiential format, this 36 hour training program integrates essential supervisory skills with key leadership elements. Going beyond the “survival skills” approach to supervision training, the focus in this program is on practical and visionary leadership skills. Participants examine the impact of values (personal and organizational), ethics and personal wellness on all of the roles a supervisor must fulfill to successfully meet the challenges that she/he must face in the ever changing world of corrections.

Key focus areas include:

- Roles and responsibilities of correctional supervisors, and the related supervisory, leadership and personal competencies

- Assessment of personal values and vision and impact on your role as a supervisor

- Exploration of your organization’s mission, culture and stakeholders and impact on daily operations

- Characteristics of ethical and principled behavior and practical work applications

- Personal wellness assessment and action plan

- Practice strategies and critical thinking skills to identify and resolve basic problems of conflict resolution, dealing with difficult people, interpersonal communication dynamics, performance assessment and coaching, counseling and discipline and conducting performance appraisals.

Who Should Attend

First line supervisors working in all areas of juvenile and adult criminal justice - from juvenile institutions to supermax prisons, jails, probation, parole and law enforcement, or those who are interested in becoming a first line supervisor of other staff in their corrections/criminal justice setting.

This program is designed to support participating organization’s initiatives to prepare employees for transitioning into staff supervisory roles.

Targets key staff supervision issues for those making the move from a staff member position to a first line supervision position of other staff members

Funding for Juvenile Courts and Juvenile Drug Courts

Attorney General to Speak at Youth Gang Symposium

U.S. Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey will open the National Youth Gang Symposium sponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The theme is "Partnering to Prevent Gang Violence: From Faith-Based and Community Organizations to Law Enforcement." Workshops will be conducted to assist "law enforcement, school personnel, faith-based and community organizations, policymakers, youth serving agencies and others who are working together to combat youth gang problems."
