The Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a report: "Death Rates Lower in State Prisons Than in the General Population", which details inmate death rates and causes of death. A notable statistic surfaced which compares inmate death rates with those living on the outside: "The deaths over this four-year period constituted an annual mortality rate of 250 deaths per 100,000 inmates, which was 19 percent lower than the adult mortality rate in the U.S. general population."
