Jails - Build Them and They Will Come

A new Justice Policy Institute report, Jailing Communities: The Impact of Jail Expansion and Effective Public Safety Strategies, was recently released. The authors, Amanda Petteruti and Nastassia Walsh, ask many thought provoking questions, such as:

  • What Are Jails and How Are They Used?

  • Why Are Jail Populations Growing?

  • What Are the Consequences of Over-Using Jails?

The Justice Policy Institute is a "Washington, DC-based think-tank committed to reducing society's reliance on incarceration."  They conclude this report with recommendations that may help communities lower jail populations.

Excellent and comprehensive report that reinforces and adds to  many of the issues we are facing and talking about in Ohio.  It is good to see this attention given to the jail community and the complexities that exist at the local level.
