Can You Use a Free Screening Tool for Mental Illness?

Back in May, 2007, I wrote a blog: How Do You Identify the Mentally Ill in Your Jail?,  that included information on the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS) and the gender specific Correctional Mental Health Screen (CMHS). A new NIJ-funded report, Developing and Validating a Brief Jail Mental Health Screen for Women, has been recently released. The research in this report validates the BJMHS as a reliable screening tool to identify both male and female inmates who are in need of further mental health assessment. The BJMHS is available at no cost and can be administered in 2-3 minutes. The free download of the screen and instructions are available from the National GAINS Center.

This link takes you to the GAINS Center page where you can click on free downloads:

gainscenter.samhsa.gov/.../MHscreen.asp

The page with the free downloads is:

gainscenter.samhsa.gov/.../bjmhsform.pdf

Hope this is helpful.

I would love to know how many jails/clinicians out there are using this tool and whether it is helpful.

The emphasis on currently is interesting, particularly in light of the number of individuals in jails who may be actively intoxicated at the time of the screen (thus accounting for their current symptoms) and the fact that section 3 is optional.
