Domestic Violence Risk Assessment Instruments and Research on Batterer Intervention Programs

The National Institute of Corrections has released two (2) reports that provide an overview of domestic violence risk assessment instruments and a guide to understanding research findings on batterer intervention programs.

Among the issues examined in the overview are generalized third generation assessment tools vs. offense-specific instruments, how to select an assessment instrument, and the most commonly used assessment instruments in the U.S.. The second report looks at research examining the effectiveness of batterer intervention programs. Types of intervention programs, methodological limitations associated these evaluative studies, and what target population benefits most from these interventions is presented.

Readers may also find a systematic review by The Campbell Collaboration assessing Court-Mandated Interventions For Individuals Convicted of Domestic Violence helpful.
