What Works/Does Not Work in Reentry

As Federal, state, and local governments look toward reentry programming as a means to improve outcomes for prisoners returning to the community, researchers are beginning to produce results regarding the effectiveness of these efforts.  The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency has just posted an extensive review of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections' Community Orientation and Reintegration (COR) program, research done by Linda G. Smith and Denise R. Suttle of the International Association of Reentry.  Of note, the outcome evaluation report found "failures of COR Completers compared to the Control Group for almost every recidivism, employment, and substance abuse measure used in the outcome evaluation."

In American Samoa, a Territory in the South Pacific, no work data or information is even available. No work for offenders and just nothing on this population. I'm interested in looking at some programs in rural, states, Territories or Tribal programs and efforts for those entering and exiting from prisons.

Although I am in Virginia, I found the few facts helpful, but I need much more to continue  work on a proposal for which I need statistics about the failure or success of the reentry of inmates and the rate of recidivism.

Thank you, Janet Bagby

Thank you for the informative data. I, however, could not get the section on reentry, my main target now, to show.

Janet, the link to the full report is good.  I just tested it, and it goes all the way to the final appendix.  If you are looking for further information, please feel free to contact the NIC Information Center's help desk at www.nicic.gov/ResearchAssistance.
