"Unlocking America" - Can It Be Done?

Today, the JFA Institute released Unlocking America: Why and How to Reduce America's Prison Population.  The report "focuses on how we can reduce the nation's prison population without adversely affecting public safety."  The authors analyze flaws in the current system and make a series of recommendations for changing the direction of that system.

we as victims have been trying to help the young man who got thirty years for three grand larceny and two breakin and entering. I believe in saving lives and lets let these non violent criminals out and give them a life

I agree with you. It is the tax payer's money that we are spending to keep non-violent offenders behind bars. I have someone that is in prison for 24 months over a violation of probation. It had nothing to do with violence and it has nothing to do with anything sexual.  24 months is too long for a VOP.

Remember...you are sentenced to prison/jail for a reason.  People that are locked up are'nt there because they missed Sunday school!! Maybe... sentence them to serve mandatory time increments in the Armed Forces on the front lines, in their own inmate companies/platoons. Let them do something respectable for their society and themselves, instead of being a menance to both.

I totally agree with the previous writer. These offenders still need to be held accountable. Sending them into the armed forces as part of their sentencing is something I have believed should be incorporated a long time ago.
